South Korea completes development of Direrctional Infrared Counter Measures (DIRCM)

Defense Acquisition Program Administration announced that South Korea has become the 6th country to have developed its own fully indigenous Direrctional Infrared Counter Measures (DIRCM).

South Korean Agency for Defense Development spearheaded the development from April 2014 to August 2018 and Hanwha Systems also participated to miniaturize the system so it could be installed on aircraft.

Numerous tests have been conducted throughout the development cycle, including onboard testing on helicopter and live-firing of MANPADS against DIRCM-equipped target, which successfully fooled the missile.

DIRCM greatly increases survivability of aircraft against IR-guided man-portable air-defense system. When the aircraft's Missile Warning Receiver (MWR) detects an incoming missile, DIRCM will shoot an intense IR beam to distract the missile.
